Animations Update

Just wanted to let you guys know that I've updated the List of Best Short Films by getting rid of those weird descriptions and adding a bunch of knew videos I've found. Here are some of my personal favorites so far:

Doodle Day 1: Anything

(Almost) every day for 30 days I will be drawing a little doodle with a specific subject each time. Today's subject is "anything", and this is what I drew:

"Monolith worms, although fiercely protective of the constructs that spawn them, are actually quite adorable."

Cosmos Quest!

Hey guys! Remember Cosmos Quest from a while ago? Well it's finally ready! I've been neglecting the good old Curious Robot for over a month, getting this new comic series ready to share. So head on over to its very own website and check it out! You can read the prologue and the beginning of the first chapter already.

Enjoy!

The Best Short Movies - TheMountainKing

TheMountainKing is a short movie about a very selfish king. His people are aided by friendly giants that look like mountains. Sadly, he sees these helpful giants only as tools. He orders them to build giant statues honoring himself, pulling the giant away from peaceful activities. Eventually, the giant decides to leave, and the rest of the citizens leave with him. Now the king must fend for himself, not to mention learn some valuable lessons.

This movie was produced by Brandon Wu on Vimeo. The animation is excellent and the characters are quite lovable.

Flickr!

Hey everybody! I finally got a Flickr page this week. If you happen to not know what Flickr is, it is an amazing photography website where people can create webpages for all their photos. So if you want to see some even more awesome photos than what's on this blog, head over to my Flickr page and check it out.

The Best Short Movies - Omelette

This cute and lovely animation is about a master and his dog. After coming home from a long and exhausting day of work, the master blearily tries to make an omelet for dinner. However, he doesn't know that his dog is actually doing it for him.

"Omelette" was produced by and is a perfect story for dog lovers.

The Best Short Movies - Dum Spiro

In this short animated movie, a Roman messenger is forced to carry an important message to the Barbarian/Viking fortress. Unfortunately, in order to get there, he must go through a peaceful forest guarded by a bear. The bear loves gardening and won't allow people into the quite glade. The messenger must do all he can to get to the other side.

"Dum Spiro" was produced by ESMA animation and feels like a Looney Toons cartoon. It even got my parents to chuckle.

The Best Short Movies - Sweet Cocoon

This funny, kid- friendly animation is about a fat caterpillar trying to fit into her cocoon so she can become a beautiful butterfly. Fortunately, she finds some friends to help her.

"Sweet Cocoon" was produced by ESMA Movies, and is quite beautiful in and of itself.

The Best Short Movies - To The Heart of the Matter

Here is a sweet little animation to cheer up your Monday. Since the producer's description sums up the story perfectly, I'll just put it here.

"A man anxiously practices his proposal to his girlfriend, while the coin operated machine that turns the world is running low on credit."

"To the Heart of the Matter" was produced by Reuben Loane using 3-D stop-motion animation.

The Best Short Movies - One Day

In this melancholy short, a wanderlust man becomes tired of his way of life. Every night, while he's asleep in his cabin, his home mysteriously transports itself to a random location on earth, devoid of humans. This prevents him from ever visiting the same place twice... Until one morning, he finds himself in the middle of a city.

It was produced by GOBELINS in a 2-D animation format. Exceptional quality and wonderful plot. Enjoy!

The Best Short Movies - Johnny Express

The next animation/short movie I have to share with you is one of my favorites. Personally, I find it rather hilarious.

It details a normal day for an intergalactic delivery man who is trying to find the recipient for a microscopic package.

It is animated by AlfredImageworks in 3-D format with exceptional quality. Enjoy!

The Shortest Poem and a Few Other Party Tricks

As the title of the posts suggests, I'll be sharing with you the shortest poem. Or at least debating about, evaluating, and trying to find the shortest poem. First, let's define "poetry" itself.

"po·et·ry

noun

the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts."

-

"po·et·ry

noun \ˈpō-ə-trē, -i-trē also ˈp(-)i-trē\

: something that is very beautiful or graceful"

One last definition from good old Wikipedia:
-
"Poetry ... is a form of literary art which uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language ... to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning. "

(Basically, literary art which creates more meaning than just the characters/letters/symbols it's composed of*.)

Something beautiful or graceful? Literary art that means something deeper? That sounds more interesting, so why don't we go with that... Here's our first contestant, a poem whose author is been lost in history, but who is suspected to be Ogden Nash, Shel Silverstien, or Strickland Gillilan. It is titled "On the Antiquity of Microbes" or more commonly: "Fleas". It reads as follows:

Fleas:

Adam
Had 'em

The words "Adam" and the word (or maybe words) "Had 'em" don't "evoke" much meaning on their own, but put into a "literary work", the mean something much more humorous and thoughtful. So it's a poem, right?

Muhammed Ali's:

Me.
We.

Now here's one that's really interesting written by Aram Saroyan:

 lighght

It's not just "light", it seems to be a composite of two "light"s amalgamated together. Another interesting fact is that - depending on your pronunciation - four out of seven letters in this word are silent. Deeper meaning? Yes. Graceful? Yes. Poem? Maybe.

There is also a poem writing by "jwcurry". It is a simple lower case "i", but the dot is instead replaced by the author's thumb print.

And my favorite also by Aram Saroyan:

Some speculate that this is perhaps a peek into the "primordial" forming of our alphabet. The "m" and the "n" just haven't quite split. It also seems to mean "I'm", the forming of conscience. Here's some more like this that I made.

Anyway, I'll leave it up to you to decide what the shortest poem really is.

I also highly recommend Vsauce's "What is the Shortest Poem?", an excellent watch.

*Yes, yes. Shoot me now, Grammar Nazis. I did end the sentence with a preposition.

Prescriptions from the Wise Physician

"Trials are medicines which our gracious and wise Physician prescribes because we need them; and he proportions the frequency and weight of them to what the case requires. Let us trust his skill and thank him for his prescription."
